- Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour has cancelled all supported live events due to COVID-19 restrictions
- Virtual events will continue from 5 July to 1 August 2021 on Rouvy platform
KNYSNA, South Africa, 29 June 2021
Knysna Speed Festival, the organiser of the Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour scheduled for 17 and 18 July, regrets to announce that the event has once again had to be cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and associated regulations.
As our participants know, we had three different scenarios mapped out considering what we believed to be realistic options based on the changing conditions. Unfortunately, with the President’s announcement on Sunday night of a move to level 4 all options have been taken out of our hands and we are now forced to cease all hopes of running any supported on the ground events.
Having had to cancel the 2020 event, we as organizers want nothing more than for the Knysna Cycle Tour to go ahead as scheduled, however, under the current circumstances and having consulted with all relevant parties it is not possible to morally or legally run the event.
This decision has not been taken lightly. We have consulted with all stakeholders including provincial and local authorities, hospital authorities, landowners, suppliers and volunteers and there is just no way that we can run an event that is safe and within the law.
“We would like to thank all our participants for their patience over the past few months as we have navigated the ever-changing landscape,” said the organisers. “Everyone’s safety – participants, officials, volunteers, suppliers and staff – is our number one priority and with the spread of the third wave running rampant, cancelling the event is the responsible thing to do.”
While we refunded or transferred entries from 2020 to 2021, this time we cannot refund participants or transfer the entries to 2022 as much as we would like to. We have incurred numerous costs over the past two years in the planning of the events, and it is simply not possible to carry the entries over for another year.
Riders who have purchased event merchandise can collect it from the Knysna Speed Festival office from Monday 12 July to Saturday 17 July between 10h00 and 16h00 or Sunday 18 July between 10h00-12h00. If you cannot make these times please contact us to make alternative arrangements.
VIRTUAL EVENTS TO CONTINUE
The good news is that the Virtual Knysna Cycle Tour can go ahead as planned. Riders who had entered and paid for the real event, and who are able to participate in the virtual tour, will be given an entry into this event without having to make a donation. Those wanting to participate are to please contact RaceTec at Email: firstname.lastname@example.org or Tel: 087 820 7223 who will issue a voucher code for participation.
EVERYONE who signs up will also get a month free on the Rouvy platform – even those not entering the formal races.
The Virtual Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour will take place from 5 July to 1 August thanks to the support from partners Wesgro, Visit Knysna and PSG Wealth Insure.
Created with local Rouvy agents Virtual Insanity, the virtual tour will feature three stages using a selection of routes from the Knysna Cycle tour for riders to experience the beauty of Knysna’s surround while participating remotely. Each stage is approximately 25 km in length with a more detailed description of each here.
Rouvy will make the segments available to ride from 1 July with riders able to ride the three stages at any time of the day or night. You can ride them as many times as you like – maybe you just want to improve your time each ride, or perhaps you want to see if you can ride the stages the most times? You choose! The stages are there for you to challenge yourself in whatever manner suits you.
The official Virtual Knysna Cycle Tour has two elements: the “Challenge” race and “Real Time” race.
The “Challenge” will kick off from 5 July and run to 1 August. Riders will be able to ride the stages as many times as they wish during the 28-day race period to improve their times and climb up the leader board.
The online “Real Time” race will be run on Saturday 17 July. All riders will start at the same time and race the 25-kilometre stage against each other to the finish line.
To sign up, click here.
We highly recommend that riders sign up sooner rather than later to get all their tech gizmo’s talking to Rouvy before the “Challenge” and “Real Time” races kick off.
To take part in the official Virtual Knysna Cycle Tour races a minimum entry donation of R200 is required with the proceeds going to the Rotary Club of Knysna. By donating riders qualify for the Rouvy leader board classification and compete for prizes. Results will be posted regularly so you can see how you stack up against the rest of the field – and your mates!
