Rouvy Virtual Knysna Cycle Tour

The 2021 Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour will offer cyclists both a real and virtual experience of its iconic routes traversing the beautiful surrounds of the area.

For cyclists who cannot make it to Knysna for the real event, and for those competing in the real event but wanting an extra challenge, we offer the Virtual Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour. Please contact

The virtual tour will feature three stages using a selection of actual routes from the Knysna Cycle tour for riders to experience the beauty of Knysna’s surrounds, while also engaging in some fierce competitive riding! Virtual Insanity, the South African agents for Rouvy, visited Knysna to film three segments of the route before digitising them into the virtual race.

Stage 1 – Knysna to Sedgefield

This ride features a flat, fast sprint start with the road hugging the Knysna estuary for 5 kms before pitching into a sharp climb of 3 kms giving the climbers the chance to attempt a break away from the pack. This is followed by a fast descent flowing into another climb, but this time it’s only a short bump. Then the sprinters get their chance to shine with a flat box sprint past Groenvlei lake and into Sedgefield – expect speeds of 40 km/h plus! Time to play the tactics game by getting into a bunch, pulling a mean slipstream and pipping your competition to the post! Then you can chill as you cool down. Sedgefield is a relaxed village leaning against the bends of the Swartvlei Estuary. Nothing moves fast in the village and it’s no surprise it’s known as “Slow town,” but for the active it is offers a wide variety of outdoor activities.

Stage 2 - Garden Route Rural

This stage is fought out on the roads above the Groenvlei lake district and bordered to the north by the Outeniqua mountains. Yes, you guessed it, there is a wee bit of climbing to do! This loop takes riders through beautiful pine and indigenous forests and up to the famous Seven Passes road. Now, for something different, you’re going to ride a piece of this gravel pass; hang on tight for a 5 km switch back attack with ascending and descending road through ravines and tight corners! After a testing climb hook a right and you’re back on the black stuff with a 14 km descent ahead of you. We rate this is an even match between featherweight climbers and heavyweight descenders.

Stage 3 - Knysna Forest (Kom se pad)

This is for MTB hill climbers, but with the chance for stronger riders to close the gap - and even get ahead - over the second half of the ride. The leg licks off with the fearful Simola smile - a 3 km / 200m climb. It’s time to make your break now lightweights! From here the route takes you deep down into the heart of one of the last remaining coastal Afromontane Forests to the Gouna river. While that was fun, as you cross the river it’s time to just put your bike into granny gear – trust us on this! The next 8 kms will see you climbing 400m. It’s tough but if you can see through the sweat take in the spectacular views. As you are about to explode you’ll crest what is locally known as “The pimple”. Take a breath and get ready for the looming roller coaster ride through verdant green forests as the dappled light paints the road ahead of you. This is where the heavier riders have a chance to catch the lightweight climbers. Once you cross the amber-coloured Gouna river it’s just a short, sharp climb up to the Prince Albert pass road. Now for the last hurrah as you get into the big ring for a super-fast 5km to the finish.

Rouvy will make the segments available to ride from 1 July with riders able to ride the three stages at any time of the day or night. You can ride them as many times as you like – maybe you just want to improve your time each ride, or perhaps you want to see if you can ride the stages the most times? You choose! The stages are there for you to challenge yourself in whatever manner suits you.

The official Virtual Knysna Cycle Tour then has two elements: the “Challenge” race and “Real Time” race.

The “Challenge” will kick off from 5 July and run to 1 August. Once again, you can ride the stages as many times as you wish during the 28-day race period to improve your times and climb up the leader board.

For those riders that cannot make it to Knysna, or those that finish the real race in time and still have some energy left, the online “Real Time” race will be run on Saturday 17 July. All riders will start at the same time and race the 25 kilometres against each other to the finish line.

As organisers we are very excited about the Virtual Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour offering on Rouvy and encourage you to sign up as soon as possible. EVERYONE who signs up will get a month free on the platform - even those not entering the formal races.

To take part in the official Virtual Knysna Cycle Tour races a minimum entry donation of R200 is required with the proceeds going to the Rotary Club of Knysna. By making a donation riders qualify for the Rouvy leader board classification and compete for prizes. Results will be posted regularly so you can see how you stack up against the rest of the field - and your mates!
